Our family loves games and math, so we were excited to try Math Sprint – The Mental Math Game from Byron’s Games.

This board game is full of mental arithmetic, which was inspired by Byron’s fascination with the Olympic Games. It is designed for ages 7+ and you get to choose the length of the game, for example whether you want to run 100, 200 or 400 meters.

There is also a mix of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division questions, along with more advanced word problems.

How We Played The Game

Well, it wasn’t too hard for my girls to like this game. They weren’t that interested in the profile pictures and hobbies of the individual ‘runners’. Their focus was more on picking their favorite color.

The game is a wonderful approach to making math fun for kiddos, but it can be a little tricky when you don’t have a group of players all at the same level of math, even though there are different card levels.

The good thing about this game is that you can change it up to suit your own family. We needed to do this as our nine year old found all the questions too easy, and my seven year old twins could only do the addition and subtraction questions, and a few of the word problems.

As a result we dropped the first person to shout out the correct answer approach. Otherwise, our oldest would ‘win’ every turn even if I gave her the hardest question in the pile and more basic questions for the twins. The blank cards and marker came in very handy for us so we could create our own challenging questions. In the end we put my nine year old up against an adult and the twins had fun doing what they could with pen and paper at hand so it was less stressful for them.

I felt this was necessary as it’s important to encourage children to continue to practice rather than be discouraged when they are obviously the slowest ‘runner’ when it comes to mental math for every single game.

However, with a little creativity I’m sure you’ll be able to adapt the game for your own family too.
