Are you looking for a Math curriculum that is aligned with Common Core and works as both a textbook and workbook? If so you may want to look into the products by ThemeVille Math

I was given the Worktext 2 and the Solutions 2 (Grade 2) books to review with one of my twins.

Curriculum Overview

As described in the the book’s Preface, the Scope of Level 2 includes:

  • Review of the Level 1
  • Place values of 100s, 10s, 1s
  • Multiplication/division within 100
  • Even – odd numbers
  • Long addition/subtraction
  • Operations with arrays, number line, money
  • Numerals – words
  • Comparison/rounding of numbers
  • Plane/solid figures, perimeter
  • Clock reading, calendar
  • Graph reading/plotting
  • Word problems

It is recommended that you use manipulatives, especially with the first 3 levels, but these are bought separately.

How to Use the Curriculum

This Math curriculum is very straight forward to use. There are 120 lessons and 10 tests spread throughout the student’s book.

Each lesson starts with a Pre-Lesson, which consists 2 sides of paper with questions covering material that has already been covered. On the first page of each of these is a greyed section containing instructions for the teacher.

This is then followed with another 2 sides of paper that briefly takes you through a new concept (main lesson), and questions to be completed.

The curriculum also comes with solutions in a separate book. These solutions are provided in a visual manual, which makes it very easy to use.

There is also a Grade Sheet at the back of the Worktext book. This gives you the opportunity to record the points your child achieves in each test and give them an overall score. This is a great visual to see which sections your child may need extra assistance.

Our Thoughts

My daughter enjoyed this curriculum, which is probably because each lesson is very short and she likes having her own workbook. The questions were straight forward and not too taxing. However, there are few instructions, so I did have to give extra explanations so my daughter could understand what was expected.

We probably won’t be carrying on with this curriculum; although having said that I may use the remaining lessons as practice for her to ensure she has grasped key concepts and understands different ways to reach the same result. I especially like the word problems to help with practical applications.

This may be a good option for those that need short lessons.
